Keeping up with digital trends is a bit like keeping up with a hyperactive toddler – you never know where they’ll speed off to next! It’s not easy to keep up with either one, but CMOs need to devote an effort to staying on top of digital media trends.
Here are seven digital trends to be aware of for the remainder of 2023:
- Connected TV’s ascendance. As streaming services become more pervasive, traditional cable TV is being utilized less. By the end of 2023, 87% of households in the US are predicted to be using connected TV. Ad formats and placement need to be carefully considered to ensure the best viewer coverage.
- Privacy and data regulations. The rise of GDPR in the last decade brought an increased focus on data and privacy. New laws and regulations have been enacted, and more are coming. CMOs must ensure that they are compliant with the pertinent laws and regulations and need to ensure transparency in how they collect and use data.
- 5G technology. With the arrival of 5G mobile network technology, marketers have available faster upload and download speeds, lower latency and connectivity that is more consistent. This technology allows for a real-time, high-quality video and interactive experience for mobile users.
- Influencer marketing. In 2023, it is expected that marketers will spend $6.16 billion on influencer marketing. This is a good way to build brand awareness and grow your audience. However, the specific influencer(s) used should be carefully considered to make sure they are right for the brand. Influencer campaigns should also be measured for effectiveness.
- Voice search and virtual assistants. Voice search is becoming more popular as more people use their smart speakers and other devices with voice technology. People use voice search for information and to place online orders. CMOs should make sure their websites and other digital platforms are optimized for voice search. New ways of using virtual assistants to deliver personalized content should be considered.
- Cross-channel marketing. Providing a consistent and seamless experience across all digital channels is of utmost importance as consumers are using various devices and platforms for brand interaction. Advertising and marketing strategies should be integrated across all channels used.
- Extended reality is a thing. Virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR) have been around for a few years, but now there is extended reality (XR) that includes not only AR and VR, but also mixed reality (MR). XR can be used to engage customers and provide impressive brand experiences.
